Abstract

The magnetic properties of [Cu4(ndpa)2(H2O)6Cl2]·2H2Oare studied by static and dynamic magnetic susceptibility measurements. The static susceptibility measurements between 2 and 300 K revealferromagnetically coupled Cu(II) dimers (J/kB = +24.0 ± 0.5 K).Two further exchange constants J′/kB = −0.40 ± 0.02 Kand J′′/kB = 2.2 ± 0.2 Kare determined by zero-field ac-susceptibility measurements in the temperaturerange between 12 and 0.4 K. The exchange couplings are assigned bymeans of electron spin resonance measurements which show that Cu4: Clrealizes a ferromagnetic alternating spin-1/2Heisenberg chain with an antiferromagnetic interchain coupling.
