Abstract

Various tissues from 24 healthy pigs in 4 age groups were examined quantitatively for the presence of cytopathogenic agents in secondary pig kidney monolayer tissue cultures. The only virus isolated from the tissues of 6 sows, 6 porkers and 6 baby pigs was an adenovirus which was isolated from the ileum of a porker. Each of 6 weaner pigs yielded “V13-type” enteroviruses, 4 yielded “T80-type” enteroviruses and 4 yielded adenoviruses. Viruses were isolated only from the intestinal tract, and not from brain, blood, lung, liver, spleen, kidney, pancreas, sub-maxillary lymph node, salivary gland or stomach. The highest titres of virus were detected in the large intestine. In several instances, the intestines of the same pig were infected with at least 3 different viruses, although “V13-type” enteroviruses appeared to predominate in the large intestine.
