Abstract

The use of the Finnigan Ion Trap Detector (ITD) for biomarker analyses is described. Whilst the conclusions reached in this study, from a geochemical point of view, are not unique, the results justly illustrate the use of the ITD as a relatively inexpensive system for this type of routine analysis. Samples used in the study were collected from various hydrocarbon-producing basins in China and the U.S.A. and particular emphasis has been placed on illustrating the determination of sterane and terpane distributions.
