Abstract
Abstract A geo-taxonomic measure that may be used for the classification of urban hierarchies is briefly described. Results obtained with this measure are shown to be comparable with those obtained by other methods using data sets from America and New Zealand. The application of the geo-taxonic measure in an attempt to classify the intra-urban hierarchy of shopping centres in metropolitan Cape Town produces results that indicate a continuum rather than the classic stepped hierarchy. A possible explanation is offered.
