Abstract

This article introduces the concept of interrupting capacity and its importance in the protection devices and switches in medium voltage power. The impact of the interrupting capacity in power system reflects the energy conditions of the primary electrical equipment and the condition of life to which they are subjected during operation. Recommendations are also shared: Why maintain an adequate safety factor in interrupting capacity in the primary electrical equipment?; operational reliability within the medium voltage electrical systems must contribute to the safety of personnel inexorably. The fundamental idea of the article is to share the practice used in medium voltage industrial systems based on international standards and literature; as well as contribute to the cognitive knowledge of electrical systems related colleagues denoting the impact of knowing this.
