Abstract
This article is a detailed discussion of the American Standards Association 1951 calibration of the audiometer and the events that led up to the adoption in the United States of the International Standard Organization 1964 standard. Basic review is allocated to the physics of sound as it relates to audiometer calibration. A conversion table is provided to shift from one scale to the other. The clinical implications of the two scales are discussed.
