Abstract

The semimetal Bi(0 0 l) films were prepared by the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method. The hydrophobicity of the films was improved by increasing the surface roughness at the expense of weakening the preferred orientation. The hydrophobicity of the semimetal film surfaces was found to increase as the surface roughness decreases. The reason for the increasing hydrophobicity is demonstrated that the channels between the interface boundaries improve the hydrophobicity. A method that generates channels between interface boundaries is proposed to achieve surface hydrophobicity without compromising the unique transport properties.
