Abstract

Summary Tove Degnbol, ‘The Interactive Approach to the Study of State and Society Relations’, Forum for Development Studies, 1996: 2, pp. 327–351. The article presents a theoretical synthesis and discussion of a range of contributions to the interactive approach to the study of state-society relations in an African context. It concentrates particularly on the suggestion to study interaction between state and society and to disaggregate both state and societal forces. The usefulness of the approach is illustrated by its application to a specific study of interaction between two different state agencies and local farmers in the Sikasso region in Mali.
