Abstract

AbstractCertain metal ions, in particular Co2+, Ni2+ and Cu2+ were found to increase the yield of formaldehyde at the expense of glycol during the radiolysis of methanol. The activities of the divalent first‐row transition metal ions correlate strikingly with the effect of these metal ions upon the quenching of triplet anthracene as measured by Linschitz and Pekkarinen. Both effects are ascribed to rapid complex formation between the metal ions and the· CH2OH radicals or triplet anthracene.
