Abstract

'Like gamblers, we all try to manipulate numbers to our advantage in the everyday affairs of life' (Keith Ellis Number Power Heinemann 1977 p99) At the beginning of January 1981 a random 10% sample of members of The Institute of Physics living in the United Kingdom received a questionnaire relating to their total and secondary incomes. Of the 1200 questionnaires sent out, 873 were returned before the closing date representing a response rate of 73%.
