Abstract

An Institute of Oceanography was established at the University of British Columbia in the fall of 1949. The Institute is undertaking to train students at the graduate level in the principles and techniques of the oceanographic sciences and to carry out fundamental research in oceanography. The Institute is not self‐sufficient but is regarded as a body whose function it is to correlate the interests of the University Departments of Chemistry, Physics, and Zoology in the study of the sea. It is supported jointly by the University and by Canadian organizations including the Defense Research Board and the Joint Committee on Oceanography. The latter represents the interests of the Royal Canadian Navy, National Research Council, Fisheries Research Board, and the Hydrographic and Meteorological Services. The Institute is directed by a Committee of Oceanography, under the chairmanship of W. A. Clemens, on which are represented the cooperating Departments and supporting organizations. The present staff includes W. M. Cameron (Department of Zoology), G. L. Pickard (Department of Physics), and J. P. Tully (Pacific Oceanographic Group, Honorary Lecturer in Chemistry).
