Abstract

The blunting of a crack tip under creep conditions is investigated using an approximate analysis which assumes that the crack blunts into a semi-circular shape. The rate of crack opening displacement is determined as a function of applied load and the material creep strain rate law. The time to initiate growth of the crack is expressed in terms of the crack opening displacement at initiation and the result is compared with experimental data.
