Abstract
The oxide layers often observed on fatigue crack surfaces raise a number of problems and data concerning the kinetics of their formation and their influence on fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) is scarce. The research work conducted in this field shows that a close relationship exists between the fatigue crack growth rate and the thickness of the oxide layer formed on the crack surfaces. The present study clearly shows the influence of testing conditions, especially the load cycle frequency, on oxide formation and FCGR.
