Abstract
N-naphthyl-substituted pyridinium cations fluoresce in liquids at 293 and 77 K and have an unusually large Stokes shift ((9−15)×10 3 cm -1). The Stokes shift is a result of the torsional relaxation of different aromatic groups. Characteristic fluorescence spectra demostrate dependence of the Stokes shift on the solvent viscosity.
