Abstract

In contrast to the usual screening of the Coulomb potential by the dielectric constant ϵ an improved treatment of screening effects is given which is based on many-electron theory. As a consequence of it the Auger recombination probability is remarkably enhanced, indeed by a factor ( ϵ 2 + 1)/2 which is of the order 10 2. Discrepancies between theoretical and experimental recombination rates in Si and Ge can be resolved in this way.
