Abstract

McKay, H. M. 1988. The influence of pine on the form of Sitka spruce fine roots.—J. exp. Bot. 39: 1263-1266. The form of fine roots of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis Bong. Carr.) when grown in immediate proximity to roots of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and when grown separately was compared using split-root systems. When spruce roots were intimately mixed with pine roots the mean length of individual spruce laterals was significantly greater, while the length : weight ratio and number of root tips : weight ratio were smaller than when grown alone. A similar alteration in growth strategy was achieved by direct addition of mineral nitrogen. Key words— Fine root form, pine-spruce interactions.
