Abstract

Abstract. Two strains of Dunaliella, both grown at 25°C were analysed for their α‐amino acid and neutral soluble carbohydrate content. Glycerol was found as a major cell constituent in both varieties; the amount was roughly proportional to the outside NaCI concentration between 0.5 and 3 kmol m−3, and varied from 3.4% to 45% of the total dry weight of packed cells. The sum of sugars and α‐amino acids did not amount to more than 2% of the total dry weight at any NaCI concentration.
