Abstract
The influence of positive and negative ions on electrical breakdown in air is studied by means of a device capable of generating stable ion density. The results of measurements of impulse breakdown voltage with the rod-plane gap in air with positive ions or with negative ions show that the ions exert an appreciable influence on the positive rod-plane gap breakdown voltage whereas that on the negative rod-plane gap breakdown voltage is not appreciable. In the case of the positive gap, the positive ions increase the breakdown voltage while the negative ions decrease it. The process of breakdown in air with positive ions, in air with negative ions, and in air has been observed by still camera and chopped wave. The results show that the influence of the positive ions on the pattern of corona streamer and the development velocity of leaders is quite different from that of the negative ions. >
