Abstract

Summary o 1. Gold therapy was found to exert no immediate direct specific effect on thesedimentation rate. 2. A gradual fall in the sedimentation rate occurred during the course of thetreatment, but could not be attribured to the influence of gold without further investigation. Occasional sudden falls in the sedimentation rate were noted during gold treatment. I ascribe these to errors in technique. 3. The modern theory of the pharmacological action of gold is difficult to upholdin the light of the above observations. 4. It is suggested that estimations of the sedimentation rate afford a reliablecriterion in the study of the therapeutic value of gold in pulmonary tuberculosis.
