Abstract

Background and Aims: The habitual ingestion of fish is assumed to lower the incidence of coronary heart disease. Death from cardiovascular disease used to be rare among Inuits. It is suggested that C20:5 in the platelets is converted by the vascular-wall tissue to an anti-aggregatory prostacyclin. Partial dietary substitution of arachidonic acid by eicosapentaenoic acid may reduce the incidence of thrombotic disorders, including myocardial infarction. Recently high N-3 level fish oils in natural triglyceride form (20% docosahexanoic acid and 30% eicosapentanoic acid) were introduced.
