Abstract

The research deals with youth movements as the means of personal self-identification of young people, which is the most effective way to study subcultures. In its turn the wrong perception of Rastafari ideology can provoke negative tendencies in modern youth movements. We draw the conclusion that the suggested socio-philosophical approach to the study of subcultures based on the category of ‘identity’, can eliminate contradiction in explanation of various subcultures and allows integration of sociological and culturological approaches to interpreting the phenomenon of youth subcultures. The study is important because it looks at the phenomenon of youth subculture as the form of social identity. Therefore, the task is to find a way to group the markers of youth subcultures (with rastafari, reggae and hippie as an example), which would fall within the typology of social identity. The results of the study can be of use in academic courses in social philosophy, culturology and sociology, which emphasizes its practical importance.
