Abstract

The purpose of this study was to propose a theoretical model for understanding how emotional burnout and a grateful disposition may affect academic adjustment among college students. This study also examined the mediating effect of a grateful disposition. A correlation analysis was conducted using a sample of 700 college students. This survey was analyzed in two steps. First, we conducted a correlation analysis to find the relationship among three variables. Second, we conducted regression analyses to examine the mediating effect of a grateful disposition on the association between academic emotional burnout and academic adjustment, and then we evaluated this mediating effect. The main results are as follows: Academic emotional burnout was negatively related to a grateful disposition and academic adjustment. A grateful disposition also partially mediated the association between emotional burnout and academic adjustment. These results imply that disposition that displays gratitude can be considered as one of the intervention variables to assist in academic adjustment.
