Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to unravel the meaning that, from the epistemological point of view, was given to the term and condition of "indigenous" during the processes of national construction in Latin America. The objective of this work is to shed light on the notion or interpretation of the "indigenous" that has been given in the different regional historical processes and that, precisely, have allowed us to move from a moment characterized by the complete denial of the cultural differentiation to one in which, while many challenges remain, at least the importance and value of culturally different societies is recognized.
