The average automobile currently produced in North America contains about 90 kg of aluminum. That figure is expected to grow, driven by environmental needs, the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles, safety mandates, consumer preferences, and an increasingly global marketplace. This paper examines those issues, along with current automotive applications for aluminum, the technology being developed to meet future demand, and the forces driving changes in technology.
