Abstract

Directed energy beam (DEB) processes are being increasingly used to modify surface structure and to improve surface-dependent properties of materials such as wear and fatigue. Before DEB processing, however, the surfaces are usually prepared by machining or abrasive machining processes which themselves may cause considerable alterations to the surface layers. These alterations to the surface layers are discussed and the subsequent effects they may have on DEB processes are described.
