Abstract
<p class="ql-align-justify">The “Commemorating Ertugrul Ghazi and Sögüt” festival is considered to be the oldest known Yoruk festival. This festival is held every year in September and hosts not only the local community but also yoruks coming from all across Turkey as well as representatives of various yoruk-turkmen communities. Almost every Yoruk community in Turkey has settled, apart from the Sarikecili Yoruk, who maintain the nomadic lifestyle. Throughout the years, the number of associations attending Yoruk festivals has risen significantly. There are currently around 300 Yoruk-Turkmen associations within Turkey, and many festivals within their social-cultural activities. However, to some degree the lack of studies conducted on the reason Yoruk associations were founded and what sort of festivals are held obstructs a comprehensive analysis. This article touches generally on the role that Yoruk festivals plays in remembering the nomadic culture as well as how the culture passed to newer generations. The article is based on the information collected during my year-long anthropological fieldwork among Sarikecili Yoruks, on the festival attended during and after the fieldwork, and on interviews by other attendees.
