Abstract

Objective To study the impact of abnormal anoerectal movement and sensation on defecation function in children with transanal one-stage endorectal pull through operation for Hirschsprung's disease (HD). Methods Thirty seven HD patients underwent transanal one-stage endorectal pull through operation at this center. During follow-up, their anoerectal movement and sensation was studied using high resolution multi-channel detection system of gastrointestinal function and anorectal manometry. Results Of the 17 patients, 62.1% had normal defecation and normal manometry, and 10.8% restored the rectoanal inhibitory reflex after surgery. Of the patients with defecation disorders, 16.2% had anorectal motility disorders, 24.3% had abnormal rectal sensation, and the rest patients had both anorectal motility disorders and abnormal rectal sensation thresholds. Conclusions Most HD patients have good defecation function, normal anorectal sensation and motility after transanal onestage endorectal pull through procedure. Defecation disorder is associated with abnormal anorectal motility and sensation. Key words: Hirschsprung's disease; Colorectal surgery
