The Hypothalamus of the Cat: A Cytoarchitectonic Atlas in the Horsley-Clark Coordinate System.

Abstract

As the title says, this is a cytoarchitectonic atlas. It is based on the brains of eight adult cats, two of which were prepared by the Weigert method but not used for illustrations. The illustrations in the plates are from sections stained with thionine and reproduced at a constant magnification of X 22. They are very sharp and clear. The method of preparation leaves somewhat to be desired, since there was obviously some shrinkage due to fixation in 10% formalin and some distortion due to embedding in celloidin. For so small a region as the hypothalamus, however, these slight defects are not serious. Still, the sections could have been prepared as were those in the human sterotaxic atlas of Schaltenbrand and Bailey by fixation in a nonshrinking solution and sectioning by the freezing method.
