Abstract
The Scottish publicist, philosopher, theologian and social reformer Samuel Smiles (1812 - 1904) was one of the most influential European humanists of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He became popular in Bulgaria as well, thanks to his first followers and translators of his works from Russian - the Revivalists Lyuben Karavelov, Joakim Gruev and Todor Ikonomov. S. Smiles' contributions to social progress and the humanities are recognized around the world, and his work continues to be popularized and republished.
