Abstract
This chapter traces the love affair which the Scots have had with going to the pictures from the days of the earliest tents and travelling vans through the picture palaces of the interwar period to the multiplexes and film theatres of the present day. It also examines the contributions of Scots to the making of fiction films, until very recently in England and in Hollywood. But now in Scotland itself, as a generation of filmmakers have been able to access the finance needed to put Scottish stories made in Scotland on the screen, often to the acclaim of audiences across the world. The chapter also considers the documentary tradition associated with John Grierson and Films of Scotland.
