Abstract

This article tracks down the history of the world-renowned airline Aeroflot during the first 60 years of its existence. The main stages in the development of Soviet civil aviation since 1932 are described as well as the influence of technical, social and economic factors on the development of air transportation. The state of passenger aviation in the USSR is compared with that internationally and the causes of Soviet civil aviation fleet’s lagging behind the West in the 1980s are analyzed. The article is largely based on the documentary sources from the Russian State Archive of Economics (RGAE). In addition to historical facts, the article contains abundant statistical material.
