Abstract
In 1992, the Heritage Institute was created in renewed Russia, and became the first specially organized scientific institute in the country to study the problems of cultural and natural heritage. The article considers the main tasks of the institute, its structure and directions of scientific research., as well as main results of scientific work and leading achievements for the first 20-year period of the institute development.
