Abstract

This chapter will assist the healthcare simulation technology specialist (HSTS) with developing the skills to operate, set up, and maintain simulation equipment and plan and implement scenarios with educational faculty. There are two parts to this chapter: “Simulation Equipment” and “Scenario Development and Case Operation.” Part one helps to highlight the significant functional differences of the equipment commonly available for use in simulation training and serves as a guide for its implementation into simulation activities. Becoming familiar with the tools, both hardware and software, which are used to mimic the healthcare environment will aid in creating a realistic and engaging training environment. Part one will also serve as a guide for the HSTS to understand what to expect during the acquisition of equipment, maintenance of the equipment, and eventual repair or replacement that must be expected as part of the equipment life cycle. Part two of the chapter describes how the simulation operations team can work with educators on planning, designing, and preparing for an immersive simulation scenario, including the run-through, orientation, execution, debriefing, and review stages of the simulation.
