Abstract
The relation between the microstructure and the hardness of martensite-austenite mixtures was investigated semi-empirically by means of quantitative metallography. It was found that the original austenitic grain size affects the hardness of both martensite and its mixtures with austenite. A simple λ −1/2 law (where λ is the mean intercept length) was found to be suitable to describe the material behaviour.
