Abstract
As in other Arctic regions, the dinoflagellate community of West Spitsbergen waters is represented by numerous naked forms of the genera Gymnodinium and Gyrodinium. Previous protist studies have included many unidentified species due to difficulties related to taxonomic identification and an insufficient number of illustrated taxonomic keys. Consequently, the species composition of these protists is still poorly known. Here, we present the species composition of Gymnodinium and Gyrodinium genera in West Spitsbergen waters that were investigated for over 10 years. During this time, we observed forty-three taxa of both genera, of which twenty-nine were identified to the species level. We provide thirty-nine original illustrations of fourteen unidentified taxa with brief morphological descriptions. We also compare our results to previous qualitative protist investigations conducted in the Arctic.
