Abstract

We have claimed earlier (especially in Chapter 6) that the notion of truth is ultimately an epistemic one. Truth inescapably depends on one’s viewpoint and background knowledge (or something like that). In what follows we shall take this for granted and go on to investigate the relation between truth and (best) explanation. As against some other philosophers I shall not try to argue that (epistemic) truth and best explanation are identical notions. But I do claim that it is reasonable to think that true theories and best-explaining theories coincide.
