Abstract

Kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis) is one of the economically valuable species for Mallaca strait fishermen. This study aims to determine the level of gonad maturity, the size of the fish’s first ripe gonad, and the gonad maturity index of Kawakawa (E. affinis) caught at Tanjung Beringin’s Auction Place, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra. Three months of sampling were conducted, from July to September 2021. The maturation of gonads was observed morphologically. Kawakawa (E. affinis) GMI was analyzed based on a comparison between gonad weight and body weight. Male and female Kawakawa gonad maturity levels are determined by levels I, II, III, and IV. Male Kawakawa gonad maturity index ranged from 0.0053% to 4.556%, while female Kawakawa gonad maturity index ranged from 0.0032% to 5.181%. Male Kawakawa mature gonads measured 407.77 mm and female gonads measured 404.53 mm.
