Abstract

This chapter focuses on the role of age in language learning beyond the classroom. The purpose is to shed light on the way in which different age groups engage with foreign languages beyond the classroom and how these out-of-school activities can benefit language learning. The chapter will deal with key concepts in age-related research into second language acquisition, like learning rate, (ultimate) attainment, implicit and explicit language learning, and formal and informal language learning. Having read this chapter, readers should be familiar with the terminology associated with age and out-of-school language learning, and with out-of-school activities that have the potential to boost learners’ language proficiency.
