Abstract
Diagnostic accuracy research plays a lead role in evidence-based medicine for physicians and evidence-based practice for speech-language pathologists and audiologists. A key component in diagnostic accuracy research is the “gold standard” also known as the reference standard test. This test is used as the best method for the identification of the presence and absence of a target disorder. A review of the literature reveals a poor understanding of this concept, especially in the area of auditory processing disorder. It is important to approach the topic of the gold standard in the context of a diagnostic system. The overall purpose of this article is to provide guidance for reviewers of diagnostic accuracy literature regarding lesions of the central auditory nervous system and an auditory processing disorder.
