Abstract

To many readers it may appear that the subject of global maritime communications is confusing, particularly when distress alerting and communications may be carried out by relatively inexperienced persons. The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) has been developed to provide mariners with a global communications and locating network, the elements of which are capable of being operated by an individual with minimum communications knowledge and yet enable alerting and search and rescue (SAR) services to be reliably co-ordinated.
