Abstract
1. 1. Isolated mitochondria from Saccharomyces carlsbergensis and cerevisiae, that oxidized pyruvate plus l-malate or 2-oxoglutarate at high rates, did not oxidize l-glutamate at all. 2. 2. In cell fractionation studies, the activity of both the NAD +-and theNADP +-glutamate dehydrogenases, and nearly all the aspartate transminase activity of yeast were found in the cell sap fraction. 3. 3. We conclude that yeast mitochondria do not oxidize glutamate because both glutamate dehydrogenases and aspartate transminase are extra-mitochondrial enzymes.
