Abstract

Rehabilitation experts disagree regarding giving more attention to the personal and social development of the disabled as opposed to continuing the emphasis on vocational goals. This dichotomous approach to the issue is not necessary as gestalt counseling can work with both these dimensions of the disabled. Gestalt procedures can foster rehabilitation closure while enabling the person to complete important life tasks. Similarly, gestalt techniques can help the disabled in vocational self-knowledge and development while feelings of adequacy and self-acceptance are enhanced. The Gestalt approach can also guide modifications in the agency service and delivery system to make rehabilitation of the disabled more holistic.
