Abstract

THIS PAPER is a speculation; a dangerous speculation in that I shall try to read a man's mind in order to establish his motives. When I confess that the man is Alkibiades, you will comprehend the perils of the undertaking. Briefly, my thesis is this: that at all stages of his career Alkibiades knew exactly what he was doing and did it with deliberation, that he possessed an uncanny, as well as lucky, ability to forecast what would happen under given circumstances, that he was rather a shrewd gambler than a mere opportunist. If you are reminded of Thucydides' assessment of Themistokles, that, I think, is appropriate, although, to be sure, there were great differences between the characters of the two
