Abstract

The purpose of the study: to provide a general description and consider the historical aspect of the emergence and development of basketball in Ukraine.
 Results of the study. The general characteristics of the game of basketball are given. The historical aspect of the formation of this type of motor activity in Ukraine is considered.
 Conclusions. Basketball is a team sports game whose goal is to shoot more balls into the opponent's basket and at the same time prevent the other team from shooting into your basket. It is conventionally divided into 2 types: mass basketball and basketball of higher achievements. The goal of grassroots basketball is to identify talented young people who have the ability to quickly learn the game and, under the influence of systematic training, can reach the level of high sports achievements in basketball.
 Basketball in Ukraine is an important component of the national system of physical culture and sports. It plays an important role in the sports life of Ukrainians. The game of basketball is so popular that all segments of the population play it today.
 Systematic basketball training is an effective means of physical education; it has a positive effect on the physical and mental state, the functions of sensory systems and analyzers; it helps to develop perseverance, courage, determination, self-control, initiative, creativity of thinking, and collective action in children, youth, middle-aged and older people.
 For many years, Ukrainian basketball players have played a significant role in the development of world basketball.
 Ukraine's men's national basketball team is ranked 12th in the world and 7th in Europe; the women's team is ranked 8th in the world and 5th in Europe.
