Abstract

AbstractThe role of reflux in equilibrium separation processes has been examined from a mechanistic viewpoint. The raffinate reflux — presaturation of solvent with raffinate in a separate unit (presaturator) — has been demonstrated to be futile in the past, considering the stages to be ideal. We have examined the utility of raffinate‐like reflux in all the equilibrium separation processes. The nature of mass transfer in these processes with and without presaturator and its implications in the design and analysis have been presented.
