Abstract

As social media has penetrated into peoples lives, it is almost inevitable for people to acquire information from social media. Identity construction requires information related to self, and it is a crucial step in ones psychosocial development. This research delved into identity construction in a social media context via a cognitive architecture perspective. In this paper, analysis of identity construction is based on an identity construction model, including three types of identity construction are proposed. The environment social media has provided to each type of identity construction and the distinct aspects of cognitive architecture behind those identity constructions are identified. Suggestions for individuals on the usage of social media in order to maximize the identity relevant information processing are given based on the identified role cognitive architecture plays in different styles of identity construction.
