Abstract

Abstract: This is a heavily annotated translation of "La grenouille", an essay from Linda Lê's 2005 collection Le complexe de Caliban (The Caliban Complex). Informed by Kwame Appiah's concept of thick translation (2012) and Douglas Robinson's work on translator subjectivity (1991 and 2001), the annotations explore intertextual associations, cultural references and linguistic questions, as well as the translator's own relationship and dialogue with the text. The approach challenges the convention of translator invisibility, embracing instead a position the translator has dubbed "transparent translation."
