Abstract
Abstract A count of the total number of fresh waters in the Shetland Islands, as depicted on Ordnance Survey 1:63,360 scale maps, is given. Standing waters are classified by surface area and running waters by stream order value. Loch altitude and stream slope information is described, also their spatial distribution throughout the islands. The runoff characteristics of Shetland are discussed and a comparison of the numbers of fresh waters in Shetland is made with those in other areas of Great Britain.
