Abstract

IN 1 976, an epidemic of respiratory illnesses occurred among persons who attended the fifty-eighth convention of the Pennsylvania Department of the American Legion in Philadelphia? Subsequently, this outbreak was determined to have been caused by Legionella pneumophila.=' This organism or similar organisms have since been implicated in other outbreaks of respiratory disease or sporadic cases of pneumonia?' Only a few cases of Legionnaire disease have been reported in children/. ~-~ A systematic prospective study to determine the frequency and clinical characteristics of LD in an unselected population of children hospitalized with pneumonia has not been previously reported.
