Abstract
A general class of helical disorder exists which can be described by cumulative random angular motions of subunits. This disorder affects layer-line intensities and widths by a factor proportional to n2, the square of the order of the layer line. The result explains several features of actin and polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) transforms, and may be relevant to other helical systems.
